As some things settle right back into their familiar habits, do you see room for changes in others? While I am quite tethered to yoga as a personal practice, I also wanted to branch out and try something new. Luckily, in Toronto, there are no shortage of options of new fitness avenues to explore. I chose to dig deeper into a pilates based class, with pilates reformer sessions at Muse Movement.
In case you are not familiar with this machine – it is a flat bed (yep, thought this was going to be kind of easy and restful!) that uses spring resistance in addition to pulleys, bars and straps to perform hundreds of different exercises, all designed to help work and strengthen the core. By focusing on the core, one is able to stretch, strengthen and gain flexibility and balance.
And that is just what happened to me after six weeks of doing anything but resting on the reformer. I found the optimal alignment in my own body and discovered that after just six weeks everything from carrying my groceries to my old familiar yoga practice had become far easier. That was enough motivation for me to sign up for another 6 weeks of private sessions and fulfil my craving for something more dynamic in my routine.
If you have found yourself stuck in the same old workout routine, why not try something new? This doesn’t have to be an entirely new discipline, maybe just adding a new exercise or bringing in some new take on an old favourite. Let me know how it goes, I would love to hear from you!
